Appellation Sonoma Coast

Aging/Cooperage 13 months in 55% new and 45% once used French oak puncheons

Winemaking Data A blend of three Chardonnay blocks from our Pastorale Vineyard with a focus on heritage clone Montrachet, Maro, clone 76, Old Calera, New Calera, Old Wente and Mt. Eden. Grapes were whole cluster pressed cold and barrel fermented slowly over several months, followed by malolactic fermentation. The barrels were stirred as needed, resulting in a focused, nuanced wine with silky texture.

Winemaker Notes The 2018 vintage envelopes the senses with fragrant lemon zest, young jasmine and toasted brioche. Bright and flinty with a viscous texture and racy acidity accompanied by fresh lemon oil, green apple and earthy mineral character.

Vintage Notes The 2018 Sonoma Coast growing season was marked by cool, mild weather. The cooler than normal spring delayed budbreak, bloom and veraison by two weeks compared to the previous five years. The mild weather patterns in August and September allowed for excellent overall phenological ripening and development of a complex aroma and flavor profile in the finished wines.

Reviews 94+ Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2018 Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard, aged 13 months in 55% new French oak, has open-knit aromas of baked yellow apples, lemon meringue, beeswax and spices. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied and satiny in texture, with minerally fruits, bright acidity and a delicate finish. This is youthfully coiled and will benefit from another year or two in bottle. -EB, Sept. 2020

94 Points - Antonio Galloni Vinous
The 2018 Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard is complex and beautifully layered from the very first taste. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of aromas, flavors and textures. Lemon confit, white pepper and flowers give the 2018 aromatic brightness, but there’s also plenty of mid-palate pliancy and depth to balance things out. I especially like the wine’s palpable weight and strong-voiced character. (2020)

Estate-grown, this wine is light and airy, tasting of the fog that lingers so frequently in this area of Freestone, just miles from the sea. Lemony and floral, it retains mouthwatering acidity throughout, and a lightness of oak, fully integrated that adds just enough weight and a hint of baking spice. -V.B. (Sept. 2020)

A medium-bodied chardonnay with spice, dried-apple and pineapple character. Some pear, too. Creamy and flavorful, yet textured. -JS (May 2021)
