Winemaking Data A blend of two Chardonnay blocks from our Pastorale Vineyard with a focus on heritage clone Maro, clone 76, Old Calera, New Calera, Montra and Mt. Eden. Grapes were whole cluster pressed cold and barrel fermented slowly over several months, followed by malolactic fermentation. Barrels were stirred as needed, resulting in a focused, concentrated, richly textured wine.

Winemaker Notes The 2017 Pastorale Vineyard Chardonnay boasts delicate aromas of citrus blossom and gardenias met by Meyer lemon and tangy spices, making for a richly round and vibrant wine with touches of vanilla and toasted brioche in the lingering finish.

Vintage Notes The 2017 Sonoma Coast growing season saw much needed record-breaking winter rainfall which helped replenish our groundwater and the vines. The moderate start to the season helped the vines return to a more traditional mid-March bud break, followed by a normal bloom period and summer growing season. Overall, 2017 was warm due to summer heat spikes and an accelerated ripening just prior to picking. The result was more balanced phenolic development in our Chardonnay.

Reviews 97 Points - James Suckling
This is really stylish and unique with subtle resin, pine-nut and pine-needle character to the dried-apple aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, yet reserved and tight. Linear and compacted. Fantastic. (May 2019)

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The estate's single vineyard, the 2017 Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard spent 13 months in 60% new French oak. It offers more honeyed apples, melon, and caramelized citrus notes as well as a rich, textured yet still racy style on the palate. It's a beautiful, layered, deeper, richer effort. (Jan. 2020)

93+ Points - Erin Brooks, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
It has a bright nose of lime peel, crushed stone, spring honey, soft white peach and dried hay. Medium to full-bodied, it offers great concentration of fruit and mineral flavors in the mouth, with honeyed accents, tangy acidity and a long, mineral finish. (April 2019)

95 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2017 Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard is gorgeous. Ample, full-bodied and intense in every dimension, the Pastorale is super-expressive today. The interplay of rich yellow fruit and more phenolic qualities makes for an absolutely compelling Chardonnay. The 2017 was aged entirely in puncheon. (May 2019)

92 Points - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast
Estate-grown, Pastorale is brimming in apple, white flower and toasted oak, with a tease of richness in the form of crème brûlée. Stony mineral persists beneath the surface, boosting a strong, complex structure of  fresh, nuanced acidity that finishes in a lingering taste of lemon rind. (Sept. 2019)
