Finding

Freestone Vineyards

In the late 1990s, Joseph Phelps, after his namesake winery in Napa was well established,  set out on a new, singular quest: to find the ideal California terroir for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. His search led him to a place no one suspected – a tiny, unincorporated town called Freestone, tucked away off a quiet highway heading toward the Sonoma Coast. Joe’s peers and friends deemed it too cold, too rugged, too remote for serious winemaking. But Joe saw something different.

Joe was never one to settle. He was endlessly curious, inspired by wine, food, and travel, always asking, “What’s next?” If something he envisioned didn’t exist, he created it. His determination was matched only by his generosity, and his ability to see potential where others saw limitations.  This defined everything he did.

Expression of Place

Freestone sits in the heart of the true Sonoma Coast — the coldest, most maritime-influenced corner of the region. Here, persistent fog and wind extend the growing season, preserving acidity and shaping wines with focus and precision. The vineyards are rooted in Goldridge soils, an ancient seabed known for deep, well-drained profiles that naturally limit vigor and enhance varietal detail.

The distinction between the broader Sonoma Coast AVA and the West Sonoma Coast AVA is significant, and our estate spans both. Pastorale vineyard lies within the Sonoma Coast AVA, while Quarter Moon sits in the cooler, narrower band of the West Sonoma Coast AVA just 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive under intense maritime influence. This dual footprint amplifies the site specificity that defines our wines, as each vineyard contributes its own microclimate, exposure, and character.

He recognized a rare convergence of elements: fog that lingers through the late morning, wind that sculpts the hillsides, soils shaped by ancient marine sediments, and long, cool seasons that could coax exceptional clarity and tension from the vines. This was a micro-climate unlike any other, capable of producing wines with purity, precision, and profound expression of place.

Estate Vineyards

Freestone’s essence is captured within its two distinct estate vineyards: Pastorale and Quarter Moon. These sites, though separated by just a mile as the crow flies, yield fruit with significantly different characteristics. These differences – shaped by history, geography, and the coastal environment surrounding the historic town of Freestone – are why we craft single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: to express and honor the individuality of this place.

Forward Vision

Freestone’s next chapter is grounded in agroecology – also known as regenerative farming – nurturing nature’s full biodiversity in the soil and the vineyards, and a deeper expression of coastal nuances.

We believe extraordinary wines begin with extraordinary care for our land. Our commitment to regenerative agriculture isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about pursuing the pinnacle of wine quality through deeper understanding of our soils and ecosystem.
