1997 Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker Notes If we were to draw up a wishlist of weather patterns for the ideal vintage, they would not resemble the above! Yet our 1997 Napa Valley Cabernet meets or exceeds every quality standard this same wishlist would include. With its opaque color, concentrated, jammy aromas of black cherry, herbs, and mocha, the wine reveals similar, satisfying flavors and a long, intricate finish.
Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested at an average of 25.0° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then barrel-aged 20 months in a combination of older French oak (75%) and American oak (25%) before being blended and bottled in August 1999.
Vintage Notes The 1997 growing season was both remarkable and confounding, producing grapes with the intensity of flavor and extract we would associate with a small crop, yet yielding one of the most abundant harvests on record. Our own tonnage was up to 25% over projections in a year marked with a number of challenges, including torrential rains and flooding in January, high temperatures in June, July, and August, cool, foggy weather in the latter half of August, and a warm spell beginning September 19th that caused everything to ripen at once.
90 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Full black-currant aromas with some briar and dust. Blackberry fruit on the palate, but most of all lots of charred oak manifested as coffee and bitter chocolate. In golf, this would be a middle-of-the-fair-way drive, but without the distance. It's fresh and well made.(Nov. 2000)
93 Points - Wine News
Great color; purple to the rim. Heady aromas of blueberry, hazelnut and mocha. Full and plump on the palate with juicy, black cherry fruit and ripe currants. Unctuous, lasting fruit impressions that keep improving in the glass. (May 2000)
90 Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
The plump, rich, round, evolved 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon is a treat to drink. There is no doubting this vintage has produced wines with splendid fruit, evolved aromatics, and silky, seductive personalities. (Dec. 1998)
