1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard

Winemaker Notes The "grand cru" vineyard, which typically produces wines of power and longevity, has yielded an opulent, multi-layered Cabernet with great depth of color; chocolate, berry and mineral-like flavors; and ripe sturdy tannins.

Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested at an average of 25.4° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels before being bottled in February 2000.

Vintage Notes The exceptional 1997 growing season provided one of the longest developmental periods on record, and the wines are shaping up to be among the best in an amazing decade of quality vintages. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

The creamier-textures, more opulent and seductive 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard will be far more delicious in its youth than any of this vineyard's previous vintages. The fruit is sweeter and more developed, and the aromatics more evoloved than in wither the 1996 or 1995. The 1997 displays a saturated purple color, gobs of creamy-textured blackberry and black currant fruit, superb purity, good structure, and a voluptuously-textured, long finish lasting for more than 35 seconds. Unless it closes down in the aging process, it will be the most seductive Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon I have tasted yet. (Dec. 1998)
