1995 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard
Winemaker Notes The effect of the growing season on Backus was to produce an exceptionally concentrated wine with chocolate-berry flavors and aromas, sweet, powerful tannins, and a long, lush, velvety finish. We believe this may well prove one of the most noteworthy wines of the vintage, and it should age for many years.
Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested at an average of 23.7° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 24 months in a combination 60-gallon French oak barrels before being blended and bottled in January 1998.
Vintage Notes The 1995 growing season was notable for a wet spring, along with cool weather during June and July which delayed ripening and flavor development. A warm spell which prevailed throughout September and October finally brought grapes up to the desired ripeness and flavor levels, but tonnage was down and berry size smaller than usual.
91 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Minty, with sage notes leading to a supple, complex band of currant, coffee, cedar, olive and tar, that is rich and polished for such a young wine, finishing with mild tannins. (Aug. 1999)
93 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Saturated ruby purple cast. Full-bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly extracted. Moderately oaked. Moderately tannic. Black fruits, minerals and mint. Aromatically reserved, with a dense and youthful palate feel. Tightly wound and stuffed with flavor. Shows excellent grip and intensity through finish. (1998)
93 Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is a wine of great intensity. A massive, saturated black/purple-colored example, it offers an intriguing bouquet and flavors of prunes, black currants, roasted herbs, chocolate, and coffee, huge amounts of glycerin and body, and a gigantic, oversized finish with considerable tannin. This is one wine where the extract level matched the tannin's ferocity. (Dec. 1998)
95 Points - Inside Wine
Dense, dark purple hue. Wafting aromas of ripe cherry and sweet black plum with wisps of oak, grain, mint and maple. Concentrated flavors of black plum, crushed cherries and mocha imbued with youthful, leathery tannins. An affordable masterpiece. (April/May 1999)
