2016 Syrah, Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard
Winemaker Notes The 2016 Syrah has a perfumed nose of white flower, herbs de Provence, clove and earthy sandalwood. A brooding, muscular offering with layers of concentrated dark plum, black licorice, tobacco and Bing cherry followed by hints of smoked meat and spicy black pepper leading to the long, focused finish.
Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested at night to preserve temperature and freshness in the fruit and fermented using 62% whole clusters. The wine was aged for eighteen months in 41% new French oak puncheons and 59% in 2-4-year-old French oak (a mixture of puncheons and barrels). The barrel coopers included Ermitage and François Frères.
Vintage Notes The 2016 Napa Valley growing season began with a mild winter resulting in early bud break for some blocks at the beginning of March. A normal period of bloom and veraison took place in early May and mid-July, respectively. The 2016 growing season was cooler compared to the previous three vintages, allowing for aromas and flavors to develop slowly in the red varieties. The overall growing season for the Syrah in Carneros was excellent for developing balanced, complex flavors allowing for extraordinary aging potential.
95 Points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
It sashays out of the glass with seductive black cherry compote, kirsch and violets scents with hints of black tea, cracked pepper, garrigue and charcuterie with wafts of cloves and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers an arresting intensity of perfumed cherries layers with a beautiful plush texture and incredible vivacity, finishing very long and spicy. (Dec. 2018)
96 Points - James Suckling
This is a fantastic syrah with lots of dried-meat, dark-berry and spice character. Some stone. Full-bodied yet very fruity and balanced. Juicy and bright. 60% whole-berry fermentation. (May 2019)
