2016 Pinot Noir, Pastorale Vineyard
Winemaker Notes This latest release highlights juicy raspberry and savory spices with well-integrated tannin structure and inviting cranberry, clove and candied orange peel notes. Fresh and focused with a lingering red fruit and dried sage finish.
A singular Pinot Noir expression from our Pastorale Vineyard highlights select blocks planted to clone 777, Calera and Swan. Clusters were hand-sorted in order to separate the best for whole cluster fermentation. The 2016 vintage was 24% whole cluster fermented, adding spice, texture and structure, and 25% of the grapes were then selected for fermentation in oak-top fermenters, lending a rich, round mouth feel to the finished blend. Gentle punch downs were performed during fermentation until a desired taste and texture was achieved in each tank.
The 2016 Sonoma Coast growing season began with a warm, mild winter resulting in an early bud break at the beginning of March. A normal period of bloom and veraison took place in early May and mid-July, respectively. The 2016 growing season was cooler compared to the previous three vintages, especially in August and September, allowing for delicate aromas and flavors to develop slowly in the Pinot Noir blocks.
94 Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2016 offers up black raspberries and warm cranberry scents with nuances of red roses, oolong tea, underbrush and black truffles. The medium-bodied palate reveals very soft, silky, super ripe tannins, with a racy backbone supporting the intense black and red berry layers, finishing long and earthy. -LPB (June 2018)
96 Points - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast
From the producer’s estate property in Freestone, this is so, so good—an impressive wine that lingers in rose, cherry and vanilla. It has strong underlayers of forest and baking spice along with a shock of white pepper, lavender and buzzy, fresh acidity. Moderate in ripeness, it offers complex structure and makes a lasting impression. (Sept. 2019)
94 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2016 Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard is a gorgeous, dramatic wine. Expressive floral and minty notes play off the rich red berry fruit beautifully. The 25% whole clusters add nuance, something that this wine clearly needs to balance some of its more overt leanings. (July 2018)
95 Points - James Suckling
A very perfumed and beautiful red with dried strawberry and floral aromas that seduce you before tasting. Full-bodied, fine and minuscule. Bright and fruity. A juicy finish that very energetic and tangy. Sappy, too. (Nov. 2018)
92 Points - Burghound
Classic ruby color. This is also notably discreet and the nose requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax the elegant and admirably pure aromas of essence of dark cherry, clove, sandalwood and spiced tea. Like the Freestone, the middle weight flavors possess a really lovely texture, indeed it’s silky, while displaying lovely persistence on the mildly youthfully austere finale. This isn’t as dense as the Freestone but it’s finer still and I very much like the balance. (Oct. 2019)
