2015 Pinot Noir, Pastorale Vineyard
Winemaker Notes This latest release highlights sweet floral and red fruit aromas with cracked black pepper, followed by cranberry, red currant, earthy spice and tangy Bing cherry notes. A smooth and supple mouth feel with a long finish.
Winemaking Data The 2015 single-vineyard Pinot Noir bottling from our Pastorale Vineyard was selected from six blocks, all planted to a mixture of clone 777 and Calera. Clusters were hand-sorted in order to separate the best for whole cluster fermentation. The wine was 25% whole cluster fermented, enhancing texture and structure, and 25% of the grapes were selected for fermentation in oak open-top fermenters adding a richer, rounder mouth feel to the finished blend. Gentle punch downs were performed during fermentation until the desired taste and texture was achieved in each tank.
The 2015 Sonoma Coast growing season experienced dry, mild winter and spring temperatures similar to the prior three growing seasons. Bud break was 3-4 weeks earlier than normal, followed by an early period of bloom. May temperatures were cool, but August and September were consistently warm, creating conditions for one of the earliest harvests on record. The early growing season resulted in extremely small clusters and berries with intense flavor and tannin structure. The early harvest allowed our winemaking team the ability to capture the natural acidity in the fruit with ideal sugar accumulation.
96 Points and Top 100 American Wines of 2018 - James Suckling
A very stylishly assembled pinot that has a wealth of ripe red cherries framed in subtle, savory smoked meats and oak-derived spices. Has a sappy edge, too. The palate has a seamless fluid feel. A really explosive finish with silky texture and bright, energetic red-fruit flavors. (May 2018) #80 Top 100 American Wines of 2018
94 Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2015 Pastorale has a fragrant nose of violets and dried bay leaves over a core of red currant jelly, kirsch and pomegranate. Medium-bodied, it has a solid frame of ripe, fine-grained tannins and lively acid supporting the intense red fruit and earthy flavor layers...” -LPB (March 2017)
95 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2015 Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard is the most savory of the three Pinots in this range, and also the brightest. Striking scents of rose petal, mint, blood orange, sweet red cherry and pomegranate give the wine much of its distinctive personality. The 25% whole clusters add aromatic nuance and lift in one of the many strands that define this super-expressive Pinot Noir from Joseph Phelps. (April 2017)
