2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard
Winemaker Notes The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Backus Vineyard is brimming with violet, cinnamon stick, graphite, spice box and cedar notes followed by luscious blackberry jam and dusty cocoa powder. An intensely concentrated wine with seamless tannin and a long, lingering finish.
Winemaking Data Each block remains separate during picking and fermentation. The complexity of the Backus Vineyard can be highlighted through the fruit and depth found in the North and Plateau blocks paired with the structure and concentration in the steep hillside fruit grown in the South block.
Vintage Notes The 2015 Napa Valley growing season experienced dry, mild winter and spring temperatures similar to the prior three growing seasons. By mid-March all blocks at Backus were 50% through bud break, followed by a normal period of bloom. May temperatures were unseasonably cool, but summer months were consistently warm, with heat spikes in September and October, creating conditions for a low-yielding vintage of high quality fruit from one of the earliest and most condensed harvests on record. On September 7th the winery?s first Napa Valley red grapes of the season were picked at the Backus North block and all Backus blocks were picked by September 15th. Small berries and loose clusters led to intensely concentrated, rich flavors and full-bodied wines from the 2015 vintage.
97 Points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
It has a deep garnet-purple color and quite a savory/meaty nose over a core of baked plums, warm cassis, redcurrant jelly and mulberries with touches of rosemary roasted lamb, truffles, underbrush and charcoal with a touch of lavender. Full, rich, concentrated and oh-so-decadent in the mouth, the palate delivers super intense black fruit and savory layers with a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. (Dec. 2018)
97+ Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Dense, powerful and explosive, the 2015 has so much to offer. The density and resonance of the fruit is striking. (Dec. 2018)

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is a blockbuster that does everything right, and I’m probably underrating this beauty. Incorporating a small amount of Petit Verdot and Malbec (which are always co-fermented), this deeply colored beauty gives up a massive bouquet of smoked black fruits, graphite, cassis, and tobacco leaf, with more minerality and black licorice with time in the glass. Possessing full-bodied richness, a mouthfilling decadence, sweet tannins, and a meaty, powerful style, count yourself lucky if you have any of this in the cellar. It will continue drinking beautifully for three decades or more. (Jan. 2019)
