2004 Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemaker Notes Due to the ripeness of the 2004 grape harvest, the final blend for the '04 Cabernet boasts ultra concentration and lusciousness. The wine is a striking example of the vintage with aromas of soy, graphite and hints of baking spices, as well as generous amounts of Bing cherry, cassis and other dark fruits in teh fragrant nose. Sweet oak, spice and compelling grapy extract lead to a long, persistent finish.
Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested at an average of 24.2° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 18 months in a combination of new French and American oak barrels (51%) and two- to three-year-old French and American oak (49%) from coopers Sylvain, Demptos, Nadalié, Canton, and Taransaud. The wine was subsequently blended and bottled in June and July, 2006.
High quality and reduced yield characterized the 2004 vintage, which started out quite warm in early spring, then settled in a balmy weather pattern through July and most of August where mornings cool and afternoon temperatures stayed in the low to mid-90's.
However, on August 27th a three-week heat spell began with many days measuring over 100 degrees. As a result, some of the ripening fruit became dehydrated and had to be removed from the vines prior to harvesting. Depending on location, crop yields were reduced ten to forty percent.
Our job in crafting the 2004 wines was to moderate over-ripe characteristics, but from the very beginning, the aromas and flavors drifting out of the fermenters signaled outstanding quality. Color and extract were high. In barrel, red appealed rich and forward in structure -- characteristics that have continued to evolve and develop with bottle age.
90 Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
From a more flashy, flamboyant vintage, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses load of up-front fruit, soft tannings, and plenty of alcohol. Low acidity and ripe tannin result in a plump style of Cabernet to drink over the next decade. (Dec. 2006)
90 Points - California Grapevine
Medium-dark ruby color with purplish edges; attractive, intense, spicy, cedary, cassis and sweet black cherry fruit aroma with hints of coffee and dark chocolate; full body; forward, rich, concentrated, highly extracted, spicy, cassis, and cherry fruit flavors with overtones of vanilla; well balanced and structured; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Shows distinctive varietal character and is enjoyable to taste now though deserving of several more years of bottle aging. (April/May 2007)
90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Good, deep ruby red. Blackcurrant syrup, menthol and nutty oak on the nose. Rich, creamy and very ripe, with high-toned black fruit flavors nicely framed by sound acidity. Quite substantial for this bottling. Finished with building tannins and a sizable stricture. (May/June 2007)
5 out of 5 Stars - The Press Democrat
A classic -- rich and lush. Wine of the week runner up. Balanced, integrated, lovely.
