Aging/Cooperage Seven months in 30% new and 70% once used French oak puncheons
Winemaking Data Grapes were picked at dawn and held overnight in cold storage before pressing to barrel for native yeast fermentation. The wine was aged for seven months in 30% new and 70% once used French oak puncheons from coopers Dargaud Jaegle, Damy and Ermitage. The lees were stirred during and after fermentation resulting in a richly textured wine with light oak influence.
Winemaker Notes The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc opens with aromatic orange blossoms, freshly zested lemon peel, Honeycrisp apple and focused minerality. A bright and fresh wine with balanced acidity and a lingering lemon crème finish.
Vintage Notes The 2017 growing season saw much needed record-breaking winter rainfall which helped replenish our groundwater and the vines. The cool start to the season delayed budbreak, bloom and harvest in the Sauvignon Blanc blocks compared to the three previous years. Overall, the 2017 growing season was warm due to summer heat spikes. The fruit from our Home Ranch Vineyard showcased bright acidity and concentrated flavors in this vintage.
90 Points - Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine
Rich and yet conveying a sense of refinement right from the first with a deft bit of sweet oak in league with deep, lightly grassy fruit that stays center stage throughout its considerable length, the latest from Phelps is a carefully balanced, medium-full-bodied offering that hits all of the varietal marks without exaggeration of any. It is slightly fleshy and rounded in feel and finishes with fine firming acidity, and the layering at which it already hints is certain to become more manifest if afforded another few years in the cellar.
