Price $60.00, $48.00 (Phelps Preferred)

Blend and Grape Sources 100% estate-grown Chardonnay from our Freestone Vineyards.

Appellation Sonoma Coast

Harvest Dates September 9 - October 3, 2017

Aging/Cooperage Thirteen months in 42% new and 58% once used French oak puncheons and barrels.

Winemaking Data Our Chardonnay grapes are picked at night to preserve fruit integrity and freshness, followed by whole cluster pressing cold for barrel fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Barrels were stirred as necessary, resulting in a finely layered, concentrated wine.

Winemaker Notes The 2017 Chardonnay has a voluptuous, ripe nose of lemon peel and candied tropical fruit followed by vibrant citrus throughout the palate with a flinty, saline quality and a hint of toast on the finish.

Vintage Notes The 2017 Sonoma Coast growing season saw much needed record-breaking winter rainfall which helped replenish our groundwater and the vines. The moderate start to the season helped the vines return to a more traditional mid-March bud break, followed by a normal bloom period and summer growing season. Overall, 2017 was warm due to summer heat spikes and an accelerated ripening just prior to picking. The result was more balanced phenolic development in our Chardonnay.

Reviews 92+ Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
"The 2017 Chardonnay Freestone Vineyard has an open nose of lush white peach, apricot, baked quince and poached pears with nuances of acacia blossom, wet stone and lemon zest. Medium-bodied, it’s very lively in the mouth with layers of citrus and stone fruit with mineral accents, framed by great tangy acidity, finishing long and clean." -EB (April 30, 2019)

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Bright and fragrant in aromas of jasmine and lemon rind, this wine impresses in its textured minerality of wet stone and sea spray. Structured and complex, it shines in a light-bodied approach that never holds back in flavors of apple and pear. -VB (Sept. 2019)

94 Points - James Suckling
A white that grows slowly on the palate with dried apples and light pear and lime character. Medium body, bright acidity and a clean and vivid finish. Serious and linear. (May 2019)

94 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2017 Chardonnay Freestone Vineyards is a very pretty and also understated wine from Phelps. Yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes all grace this expressive, pliant Chardonnay. Beams of supporting acidity support the nuanced finish. (May 2019)

90 Points - Pinot File
Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. Reserved aromas of lemon drop, pomelo and peach. A citrus-driven flavor profile with a slight botanical tone. Slightly viscous in mouthfeel, with some length to the slightly tart, yellow grapefruit driven finish. (March 2019)
