Winemaking Data Optimum, even ripening for Insignia designated blocks was achieved by careful vineyard management throughout the growing season. Grapes were held separate during picking, sorting and fermentation.
Winemaker Notes The 2015 Insignia is densely hued with rich dark fruit, cocoa powder and fragrant dried flower notes. Velvety texture and weight on the palate with layers of juicy black plum, Madagascar vanilla and bergamot. Bold, creamy and supple with integrated tannin structure and a lengthy finish.
Vintage Notes The 2015 Napa Valley growing season experienced dry, mild winter and spring temperatures similar to the prior three growing seasons. The majority of Cabernet Sauvignon was 50% through bud break by the end of March, followed by a normal period of bloom. May temperatures were unseasonably cool, but summer months were consistently warm, with heat spikes in September and October, creating conditions for a low-yielding vintage of high quality fruit from one of the earliest and most condensed harvests on record. Small berries and loose clusters led to intensely concentrated, rich flavors and full-bodied wines from the 2015 vintage.

Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with stunning black and red plums, cassis and mulberries scents with loads of redcurrant sparks and compelling wafts of lilacs, pencil shavings, black olives and tilled soil plus a hint of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate explodes with red and black currant fireworks plus some exciting mineral nuances coming through, framed by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and beautifully layered. -LPB (Dec. 2018)

The 2015, though easily built for aging another several decades, is remarkably elegant already, with a nose marked by the subtle suggestion of roasted green peppers that lend significant depth to the more dominant aromas of cassis, kirsch, black cherries, charred vanilla, and cigar humidor. If you’re in the market for it, I’d recommend picking up half a case or more, the better to track its certain-to-be fascinating and decadent evolution over the years. (March 14, 2019)

The 2015 Insignia is a fleshy, flamboyant vintage for this wine and reminds me of the 1997. Tons of dark fruits, tobacco, cedar, and dried flower notes all give way to a full-bodied, seamless 2015 that has remarkable purity and elegance, yet still shows the vintage’s sexy style. The 2015 Insignia is a simply stunning wine in this vintage. This majestic wine instantly opens to seductive aromatics of ripe black currants and dark cherries, woven together with spices, graphite, herbs and a beautiful touch of well integrated oak, all coming together to make this nearly impossible to resist. On this palate this full-bodied red continues to thoroughly impress with its remarkable structure, concentration and poise. The beautifully polished tannins make for a luxurious mouthfeel as this works its way into the long, supple finish. It is a rare vintage when Insignia does not impress, and, in 2015, it takes a place at the very head of the class in what is proving to be an outstanding year for Cabernet Sauvignon. It is, as usual, a wine of great crafting and polish with a refined sense of strength and as much finesse as fruity richness. It is so well-mannered that it is understandable that many will be tempted into drinking it in the very near future, but it is barely beginning to give voice to all that it is, and it is a keenly balanced composition that is certain to show more and more layering as it evolves over the next ten to twelve years.
