Wine Spectator: 2017 Napa Valley

2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Reviews by James Molesworth - July 2020

2017 Joseph Phelps Insignia
94 Points
- Delivers showy fruit, with layered flavors of warmed boysenberry, blackberry and açaí berry paste, framed by a subtle alder hint and backed by warm earth and cast iron details on the finish. Not shy, and well-built for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2038. FALL RELEASE

2017 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard
95 Points
- Well-packed, featuring a range of steeped red and black currant fruit entwined with menthol, sage and tobacco notes, carried by an alluring swath of warm loam. Pretty grippy underneath, so put this one away for a bit. Best from 2022 through 2036. MEMBER-ONLY FALL RELEASE

2017 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
92 Points
- Offers a chunky feel, featuring a mix of dark plum and black currant fruit, with singed mesquite, dried bay leaf, sage and licorice root notes. Shows youthful rambunctiousness, balanced by good underlying structure and ample fruit. Should resolve easily with cellaring. Best from 2022 through 2034. CURRENT RELEASE
