Recent Wine Spectator Accolades
An excerpt from last week's Wine Spectator Stirring The Lees with James Molesworth featuring our Backus Vineyard and the single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon we produce from this special location in Oakville:
Among the more storied Cabernet vineyards in Napa Valley is Backus, on the eastern side of the Silverado Trail in the Oakville AVA... was planted in 1975 by David and Marion Backus, and Joe Phelps was the first and only producer to buy the fruit in its first vintage, 1977. That bottling started a long history... And with the purchase of the Backus vineyard by Phelps in 1996, you could call it a California monopole.
2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard: Very expressive sassafras, bay and sage aromas. The core is still laden with dark plum and cassis fruit, while the structure, and in particular the iron note, takes on that aforementioned rusty edge.*
For a limited time, we are pleased to offer Phelps Preferred members 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard from our cellar. To acquire this rare library gem, join our Phelps Preferred membership program.
