Robert Parker Wine Advocate Awards 2015 Insignia 98 Points
Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Robert Parker Wine Advocate has awarded our latest Napa Valley releases and future vintages outstanding scores in the December 2018 Napa Report. Congratulations to our vineyard and winemaking teams!
2015 Insignia - 98 points
Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with stunning black and red plums, cassis and mulberries scents with loads of redcurrant sparks and compelling wafts of lilacs, pencil shavings, black olives and tilled soil plus a hint of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate explodes with red and black currant fireworks plus some exciting mineral nuances coming through, framed by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and beautifully layered.
2016 Insignia – (97-100) Points
A barrel sample of the 2016 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little reticent at this still nascent stage (to be bottled in January 2019), opening out to reveal chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of underbrush, cedar chest and bouquet garni plus a hint of grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate springs forth with exciting energy, offering loads of red and black fruit layers and compelling herbal sparks, featuring a firm, fine-grained backbone and bags of freshness lifting the finish.
2017 Joseph Phelps Insignia – (94-97) Points
The 2017 Insignia is a barrel sample blended of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it features lovely crème de cassis, blackberry preserves and spice cake scents with touches of plum preserves and dried Provence herbs plus hints of tree bark and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with energetic fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins and finishing with a lovely minty lift.
2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard – 97 Points
It has a deep garnet-purple color and quite a savory/meaty nose over a core of baked plums, warm cassis, redcurrant jelly and mulberries with touches of rosemary roasted lamb, truffles, underbrush and charcoal with a touch of lavender. Full, rich, concentrated and oh-so-decadent in the mouth, the palate delivers super intense black fruit and savory layers with a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.
2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard – (96-99) Points
The barrel sample of 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is deep garnet-purple colored, it comes charging out of the gate with bold, expressive blackberries, Black Forest cake and freshly crushed blackcurrants notes with hints of kirsch, red roses, candied violets, mocha and cigar box plus hints of tapenade and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied with a very firm backbone and superbly ripe, finegrained tannins, it simultaneously delivers great power and wonderful elegance, finishing long with an evocative ferrous character lacing the black fruit layers.
2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard – (94-96)+ Points
A barrel sample, the 2017 is deep garnet-purple in color, it is already exhibiting bold, gregarious black and red currant notions with loads of floral and savory nuances—dried bay leaves, charcuterie, tapenade and fungi—with wafts of pencil lead and tree bark. Medium-bodied with a solid line of ripe, grainy tannins, it has bags of bright, lively fruit and a long, mineral-laced finish.
2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – 93 Points
Deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of crushed blackcurrants, blackberry pie and blueberry compote with suggestions of cigar box, menthol, rose hip tea and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with vibrant black fruit laced with plenty of spicy sparks, framed by grainy tannins and oodles of freshness and finishing long with a menthol kick.
2016 Syrah, Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard – 95 Points
Medium to deep garnet purple colored, it sashays out of the glass with seductive black cherry compote, kirsch and violets scents with hints of black tea, cracked pepper, garrigue and charcuterie with wafts of cloves and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers an arresting intensity of perfumed cherries layers with a beautiful plush texture and incredible vivacity, finishing very long and spicy.
