Antonio Galloni - Sonoma 2016 Vintage Report

It is always fascinating to taste Joseph Phelps' Sonoma Coast wines because they are so markedly different from most, if not all, other wines being made on the coast today. Justin Ennis makes big, bold Chardonnays and Pinots that offer tons of textural richness and yet also convey the energy that is one of the most distinctive attributes of the coast.

2016 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay, Freestone Vineyards
95 points, “The 2016 Chardonnay Freestone Vineyards is rich, bold and luscious. Apricot, orange peel, lemon confit, white flowers, biscuit and honey resonate in this beautifully layered, ample Chardonnay. The Freestone is one of the most dramatic, full-bodied Chardonnays readers will find in this part of the Sonoma Coast.” New Release

2016 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay, Pastorale Vineyard
95 points, “The 2016 Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard is quite dense and yet retains striking translucence. Here the flavor profile is brighter and more citrus driven than in the Freestone Chardonnay. Some of that is site, but the decision to age the Pastorale exclusively in 500-liter barrels undoubtedly contributes to the feeling of freshness and tension. White flowers, slate, white pepper and a range of mineral-driven undertones round things out in style.” (winery-exclusive member release)

2016 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir, Freestone Vineyards
92 points, “Succulent red cherry, plum, cola and spice notes are pushed forward in the 2016 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards. The 2016 is an undeniably beautiful and well-made wine, but it is very much done in a somewhat bombastic style, especially within the context of the appellation. The dense fruit and powerful tannins might come as a surprise to readers who expect this to be an entry-level wine in the range. The Freestone Pinot is approximately equal parts Pastorale and Quarter Moon.” (summer 2018 release)

2016 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir, Pastorale Vineyard
94 points, “The 2016 Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard is a gorgeous, dramatic wine. Even with all of its size, the 2016 has a striking level of translucency that adds so much intrigue. Expressive floral and minty notes play off the rich red berry fruit beautifully. The 25% whole clusters add nuance, something that this wine clearly needs to balance some of its more overt leanings.” (winery-exclusive 2019 release)

2016 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir, Quarter Moon Vineyard
94 points, “Inky red and purplish fruit, hard candy, exotic spice and wild flowers infuse the 2016 Pinot Noir Quarter Moon Vineyard with much of its distinctive inner sweetness and raciness. Deep and creamy through the middle and into the finish, the Quarter Moon is another plush, big wine from Phelps.” (winery-exclusive 2019 release)
